Many clients choose Flourish Mindset after trying traditional talk therapy to understand how past experiences impact the way they are showing up in their relationships. Oftentimes traditional talk therapy doesn’t provide results as quickly as clients would hope to feel better.

One of the most efficient ways to heal from painful previous experiences and build fulfilling relationships is through EMDR therapy. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), is a type of structured and brief individual therapy that is proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences.

EMDR does not require extensive talking about trauma, instead bilateral stimulation through light, sound, eye movement, or tapping is used to help people resolve unprocessed traumatic memories stored in the brain. EMDR helps the body reactivate its natural process of moving toward resolution after a fight/flight/freeze response.

How does EMDR Therapy help heal trauma?

Our research-backed EMDR therapy offers the opportunity to get relief quickly by helping you change the way you relate to disturbing past experiences. EMDR helps your brain to properly process and store memories that have been interfered with by traumatic or disturbing events. It taps into the brain and body’s natural healing process and helps you have a new way of relating to the difficult event. Many people experience feeling less burdened and better able to live in the present moment after EMDR Therapy. Read our blog about EMDR Therapy here to learn more.

How do we work together in EMDR therapy?

As a trauma-informed therapist, Hanna understands that beginning therapy to address painful past experiences can be nerve-wracking. This is why she moves at the pace of trust. Meaning, she will work with you to establish a treatment plan that works for you, working together in collaboration to explore what you feel comfortable with when you feel comfortable with it. She will use her expertise in trauma-informed care and knowledge of the mind-body connection to teach you tools to help self-regulate as well as techniques to help you harness your internal ability to cope and establish safety.

What is online EMDR?

Remote EMDR therapy is an effective method of treating trauma, anxiety, and depression. It offers you the ability to be in a comfortable space, with privacy. For many people, the thought of getting dressed, driving to an office, finding parking, and waiting in a waiting room all before you even start your session is exhausting. Remote EMDR saves you time and energy and allows you to create an environment you feel at ease in so you are truly able to engage in EMDR and experience its benefits fully.

Online EMDR Therapy vs. In-Person

The main difference between online EMDR and in-person is the way the bilateral stimulation is delivered. When in person, the therapist will use either their hand, a light bar, or hand-held tapping devices. During remote EMDR therapy, the client will either self-tap, use online software that allows for eye movements, or auditory tones provided by the therapist.

What to expect in an EMDR session?

You will begin the process with a history-taking session and introduction to the EMDR process. Your therapist will explain how EMDR works, and ask you questions about your background and history to determine the focus of your treatment. You will then have a preparation session in which you strengthen existing grounding and self-regulation skills, and learn new tools for maintaining a sense of peace within yourself.

What to Expect During Your Reprocessing Session

During your reprocessing session, you will be asked to identify a specific memory to work on. Your therapist will then ask you to identify an image, emotion, body sensation, and negative thought associated with the experience. You will engage in sets of bilateral stimulation ( eye movements, tapping of the knees, holding tactile hand buzzers, or auditory tones). After each set, your therapist will ask you to share what you noticed and direct your focus for the next set accordingly. You are always able to stop at any point.

Goals for EMDR Therapy

The goal is to be rooted in the present moment, knowing you are safe, while accessing the disturbing memory so you are not pulled back into a traumatic re-experiencing, but instead able to experience the painful event with new insight into the adaptive resources you now possess. This distinguishes between the past and the present, something that often gets mixed up when we experience trauma. EMDR reduces the feeling of being back in that moment, so you can feel free to move forward.
